Written By Views maker on June 29, 2008 | 6/29/2008

Cotton prices have gone up by as much as 38% in the domestic market since last year. Textile companies anticipate a 10% dip in profit margins on account of high prices. Prices of cotton are shooting up despite the estimated production of 31.5 million bales (of 170 kg each) against the domestic consumption of 24.1 million bales. Exports are expected to rise about 47% to 8.5 million bales in cotton year 2007-08 against 5.8 million bales in the previous year. The government is also considering the option of bringing down import duty on cotton. Presently, raw cotton attracts an import duty of about 14.7%.

Textile trend in US

Written By Views maker on June 27, 2008 | 6/27/2008

US imports of textiles and clothing grew by only 1.8% in 2007-to 53.1 bn sme (square metres equivalent)-following a 2.6% increase in 2006 and double-digit growth in seven of the nine years between 1996 and 2005. Within the 2007 total, imports of made-up textiles rose by 4.5% and apparel by 3.5%. But fabric imports fell by 2.9% and yarn imports by 9.8%. Apparel continued to account for the highest share of total imports, at 43.9%, reflecting strong US demand for cheap clothing. However, the importance of made-up textiles increased for the tenth successive year. In fact, the share of made-up textiles doubled between 1997 and 2007, from 16.8% to 33.7%.
In terms of fibre type, cotton dominated US clothing imports in 2007 with a share of 60.2%. But man-made fibres dominated imports of all textile and clothing products with a 55.0% share.
US import prices rose for the second year in 2007, following several years of falling prices. The increase was led by China and Asean countries, including Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam. But the average price of imports from Mexico continued to fall. China strengthened its lead as the USA's biggest supplier in 2007, in both value and volume terms. Moreover, growth in imports from
China accelerated following a slowdown in the previous year. In volume terms, imports from China rose by 14.8% in 2007. That said, 2007 was the second consecutive year in which growth fell below 40% since China joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in late 2001. In 2002 US imports from China rose by 124.5%, in 2003 by 67.0%, in 2004 by 40.7% and in 2005 by 43.7%. US imports from Mexico, the second biggest supplier, fell in both value and volume in 2007. The drop in value was the sixth in succession, while the volume fall was the third in a row. Dominican Republic-Central America- United States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) countries also supplied less in 2007, in both value and volume. Imports from South Asia-including India, Bangladesh and Pakistan-accounted for 13.6% of the US import market in value terms in 2007 and a larger 14.9% in terms of volume. But the fastest growing supplier in 2007 was Vietnam-in both value (up by 34%) and volume (up by 31%).

Tough Time for Indian Textiles in US, EU

India's textile export prices have not been as competitive as those of smaller countries like Vietnam and Pakistan and faced severe competition in the E.U. and U.S.  markets during 2005 and 2007. India's average price for textile exports was higher than China's and Pakistan's, its share in U.S. global textile imports increased by a mere 1.6 percent between 1995 and 2007. Vietnam's share rose to 4.7 percent from 0.04 percent, while that of China went up to 33.5 percent from 11 percent in the same period. India was the third largest exporter of textiles and clothing in the U.S. market. However, in value terms its exports were just one-sixth of China, which was the largest supplier. In volume terms, Pakistan was the second largest exporter of textiles and clothing to U.S. in 2007, while India ranked fourth. Vietnam also seems to be fast catching up with Indian exports.Prices of Indian textiles and clothing hardened during 2005-07 in the E.U. market. Its share in E.U's global textile imports declined to 7.5 percent from 7.9 percent between 1995 and 2007.

Pakistan textile exports' share drops by 9%

Pakistan has experienced a drop of nine percentage in textile exports. This is one of the worst performance by this sector. The Pakistan exporters feel that intense competition from China and Bangladesh have wounded them along with high production cost. The production costs are high compared to their main competitors such as China and Bangladesh, this make them uncompetitive in global market. The exporter demand for more R&D setups to increase the exports.

Reason For Raising Yarn price

Written By Views maker on June 18, 2008 | 6/18/2008

The yarn price in India as whole has been increasing. many say the reason for the price hike is due the cotton price rise. Now comes the question, has the demand for cotton gone due to low production as compared to previous, the answer is no, the production cotton is as compare to previous year. The main culprit the is exports, According to Cotton Advisory Board (a government body under the Central Textile Ministry) the cotton export for the year 2007-2008 is 8.5 million bales, (one cotton bale consists of 170 kgs) out of which 60% has gone to China alone.if these exports were not allowed by our government then, there would never have been an shortage of cotton in the home market. Now Tirupur exporter have felt the pinch of the rising yarn price.
