TIRUPUR exporters demanding ban on cotton and cotton yarn exports

Written By Views maker on September 11, 2013 | 9/11/2013

Unprecedented increase in cotton prices has forced
garment industry stakeholders in Tirupur, the knitwear hub of
the country, to adopt resolutions demanding suspension of
cotton and cotton yarn exports for three months among other
things.
According to associations of stakeholders of Tirupur garment
sector, the high increase in the cotton yarn prices has
significantly affected the knitwear garment sector of Tirupur and
sustenance of stakeholders has become increasingly difficult as
a result.
A meeting of the stakeholders of the garment sector held on
Tuesday in Tirupur presided over by Dr A Sakthivel, president of
Tirupur Exporters Association, adopted several resolutions to
seek protection for the textile industry.
The meeting said as the cotton exports have already crossed
90 lakh bales. The cotton yarn exports touched 590 million kg
in the first five months. The cotton yarn advisory board has
estimated only 1000 million kg of cotton yarn exports for the
whole year. Moreover, 60% of cotton yarn exports are destined
for competing countries like China and Bangladesh ultimately
giving stiff competition to country's garment exports. The
meeting wanted both exports to be suspended for three months.
The other resolutions are that Cotton Corporation of India
should sell cotton only to actual users and not to the traders, a
request to the associations of mills to advice their members to
slash the cotton yarn prices by Rs 8 per kg to Rs 10 per kg and
roll back to the price level in last month and that the
associations do not have any objection to the farmers getting
right price for the cotton produced by them.
The meeting decided to send the resolutions to the Prime
Minister, and the union ministers handling finance, commerce,
textiles and agriculture. If the government does not concede to
their demands, the associations will meet and decide on the
next course of action. The conference also appealed to the
Central government to implement free trade agreement with EU
nations to increase exports from Tirupur.

Increasing yarn price..

Written By Views maker on September 04, 2012 | 9/04/2012

Expressing concern over volatility in yarn prices, the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) has sought early Government intervention to overcome the situation.

In a letter to Commerce and Industry, Textile Minister Anand Sharma, the AEPC said cotton yarn prices should be carefully monitored, as small manufacturers and handloom weavers were considerably impacted due to the steep price hike.

AEPC Chairman A. Sakthivel said, “Unfortunately in the last few months, we have experienced volatility in the price of cotton yarn. While cotton has gone up by about 3-5 per cent in the last two months, yarn prices have increased over 15 per cent in the same period. Also, Indian cotton yarn prices are higher than in other countries such as Pakistan”.

He said at the recently concluded Cotton Yarn Advisory Board meet on August 23, a rather grim scenario had emerged as the total production estimate of cotton yarn stood at 3.5 billion kg. While exports of cotton yarn were projected at 920 million kg, based on current estimates it may exceed one billion kg.

AEPC said that to tide over the situation, the Government needed to put a cap on exports of cotton yarn or free imports of cotton yarn.

“At this stage, we are not advocating any cap on exports, but at the same time, we request that the custom duty of 10 per cent on cotton yarn be completely removed and yarn imports made duty-free. Also, drawback may be allowed on export of garments manufactured from such imported cotton yarn,” he added

40% reduced and still low demand

Written By Views maker on August 22, 2011 | 8/22/2011

Last year there was a demand and supply mismatch of cotton in the international market which let to record high yarn prices. Then suddenly and an unexpectedly fall in the cotton price induced a fall of yarn prices. The spinner have lost nearly 50% of the stock value of cotton due to sudden fall in cotton price. The yarn price was hit by a hard 40% reduction, even then there is a low demand for the hosiery yarn in Tirupur. Many attribute this sluggish yarn demand to existing dyeing pollution problem. Many exporter as happy to have minimum orders just to retain the buyers till the reopening of the closed dyeing units.

Written By Views maker on July 29, 2011 | 7/29/2011

Tirupur dyeing factories have remind shut down since February 2011. Tirupur garment industry has been badly affected by the non functioning of Tirupur dyeing units. There are literally very minimal support from the then Tamilnadu government, Mean while a new government in Tamilnadu took charge and seems to very keen to solve the problem.

Now the government has selected two technology to used as solution for low cost and practicable technology for zero discharge of dyeing effluents. on that basis first technology has been allowed to be tested on a trail basis in the arulpuram common effluent plant and results will be known with in 2 to 3 months from now. In the mean time a team will visit and analysis an another nano - technology which is been currently used in Gujarat. In case the technology which is test in arulpuram common plant fails the nano-technology will be tested. Only based on the trail run results further course of action will be proposed.

The Tamilnadu government has announced a 200 cr interest free loan for the dyeing units to upgrade the effluent treatment plants. It’s has estimate that about 10 cr for a common effluent treatment will be provided. There are about 20 plants are present in Tirupur so 200 crores in total support from Tamilnadu government. The central government has already promised to support with 160 crores and therefore Tamilnadu government will effectively support with 40 crores.

Fasting to draw attention of the government on Tirupur pollution problem

Written By Views maker on July 18, 2011 | 7/18/2011

The new government has promised to resolve the dyeing pollution problem but so far very little has been done. It’s evident and matter of fact that many small units have disappeared and many more would eventually be wiped out if there is no solution for the dyeing problem with in six months from now. Tomorrow there would be a fasting in tirupur to seeking the government’s attention on the pollution problem.

Little Progress

The progress toward the solution is too little and many have began to lose faith on the government. The new textile ministry has helped to constitute a committee yesterday. The committee consist of government representatives and representatives from the tirupur dyeing units, headed by textile secretary. One common plant has been approved on trail basis but this is too little do to resolve the existing problem. a lot more is expected and also at a much faster pace.

Power cut barrier for TN textile reports CNN-IBN

Written By Views maker on June 02, 2011 | 6/02/2011

<click to read CNN-IBN Article>

It's India's textile capital but Coimbatoire, which has over 22, 00 spinning mills, is slowing down thanks to daily power cuts of over 7 hours. The production is down by over 40 per cent and many units on the verge of shut down.

The production loss is about RS 55-60 crores per day and the industry is very badly affected since power constitutes to 40 per cent of our expenses. The crisis is in a very bad situation and if things don't improve the mills will have to close down due to the losses, said J Thulasidharan, Chairman, The Southern India Mills' Association

Coimbatore's 10,000 small factories are also badly hit. Through the day they get just 80 per cent of their requirement from the power grid. But shockingly, during the peak hours of 6-10 pm, this drops to just 10 per cent. This is apart from scheduled power cuts of 3 hours every day.

"These are continuous process industries and we are not able to use generators to back us up because the input voltage requirement varies from 500-600 Volts which is not available in the generating segment. So this causes us to shut down or go for power purchase in the power exchanges"

Tamil Naidu has a power demand of 10,600 MW and a deficit of 2000 MW. Of this, Coimbatore, alone has a deficit of 600 MW.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association President Mahendra Ramdas, "There is a shortfall of 600-700 MW for Coimbatore alone out of the 1500 MW for the state's shortfall and that's because it's a high consumer region with max number of HT consumers located in Coimbatore next.

Tripartite talks on Tirupur dyeing problem

Written By Views maker on May 30, 2011 | 5/30/2011

Newly formed Tamilnadu government yesterday ( 30 - 05 - 2011) held a tripartite talks on the Tirupur Dyeing pollution problem. The parties to the meeting was from the Tirupur industrial association, Farmers association

and the government representatives. No decision was reached during the talks, government has proposed further talks to be held in the immediate future to resolve the dyeing pollution problem. It's believed that the farmers association have insisted on implementing the court order. wait is still on for a solution on tirupur dyeing pollution problem.

How long will it take to reach a solution

We believe that solution could be reached but the time for that would take at least or minimum of six months. The first step is to reach a consensus among the farmers and the industrial association. It seems like that the farmers association would not given in easy so we expect a lot of time to be consumed in talks to get the farmers association agree to a solution, then the next step would be to appeal to the court of law. so on the whole both the process would at least take six months from now.

Eco green evaporator for dyeing units

The Green Textile Movement, a division of the NIFT-TEA Knitwear Fashion Institute, Tirupur, has come up with an 'eco green industrial evaporator' to treat textile effluents based on a similar German technology.

As per the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board's (TNPCB) advice, the project is being studied further at IIT Madras. The minister has also promised to take the project to the notice of the Chief Minister.

According to the promoters of the project, effluents are initially treated through biological or chemical methods under the present system. Following this, as much as 80 to 90 per cent of the effluents are treated using the Reverse Osmosis system. However, owing to technical reasons, handling the remaining 10 to 20 per cent through evaporators is a major problem. Hence, they are unable to fully adhere to the HC order in 2006, which directed them to use the Zero Liquid Method (ZLM). The final evaporation requires more power or firewood and the machines could also become useless due to the sedimentation of salt on them. Finally, on January 28 this year, the HC ordered the closure of 700 units at Tirupur even thought they spent crores of rupees trying to achieve ZLM. Now, the institute, on the basis of Gradierwerk, a biological method to treat seawater followed in Germany, established a model plant in a unit at SIPCOT in January. The plant has been effectively treating effluents for the past three months. Under this concept, a plant could be established using 30 ft high wooden frames. Then velikathan (thorny shrubs or prosopis juliflora) is sprayed onto its various wooden compartments. The effluents are then sprayed on the overhead of the wooden frame using motors. Following this, the effluents would percolate through the velikathan and evaporate. As much as 1 lakh litres of water with 30,000 TDS ppm of salt treated in such a manner would give an output of 10,000 litres with 20,000 TDS ppm salt. The remaining 10,000 litres could then be converted into solid waste using a crystaliser in a chilling unit, thus attaining ZLM. In comparison to the existing RO system, this new method is more cost effective, environment friendly and could also improve rainfall.

Tirupur entrepreneur and technology - a news from economic times

Written By Views maker on May 13, 2011 | 5/13/2011

Source:Economic Times

The journey from a garment exporter to a retailer of branded apparel took just over two years for KAS Thierumurthi, a first-generation entrepreneur and founder of apparel manufacturing company Stallion Garments. Based in the textile hub of Tirupur in Tamil Nadu, the 46-year-old entrepreneur ran a steady business, churning out a range of apparel for global clothing brands in Europe and the US. But closer home, domestic consumption was rising and demand for global apparel brands in India was on the upswing. Keen to grab a share of this booming business, Thierumurthi made his boldest gamble. He invested in a piece of technology - an enterprise resource planning (ERP) software product that helps track and maintain back-room inventory.

This technology boost helped land a coveted prize for Stallion Garments. The company bagged a licence to manufacture, market and sell products of the iconic US clothing brand Levi Strauss & Co.
"I have a six-year license (worth Rs 100 crore) from Levi's because of adopting information technology in my business," says Thierumurthi, who has seen revenues rise by 15% annually to touch over Rs 60 crore. Stallion Garments is one amongst a growing list of over 4,000 small and medium companies in Tirupur, a textile city located on the banks of the Noyyal River, about 322km away from Bangalore, who are adopting technology to boost business productivity and expand revenues.
Tirupur supplies to some of the world's largest retailers including Walmart , Polo Ralph Lauren , Diesel , ARMY and Tommy Hilfiger . Buoyed by a few early successes of IT adoption, the garment industry of Tirupur, which recorded cumulative business of Rs 20,000 crore last year, is now embracing technology more deeply. Textile exporters have started to use a common technology and software platform on a pay-as-you-use basis.

Tirupur dyeing association members went on a fast

Written By Views maker on May 11, 2011 | 5/11/2011

The dyers association choose to register their protest and called for a one day fast on 10-May-2011, the turn out was very few. The unity amongst the member seems to be all time low. Many dyeing unit are busy finding a new location or already established a legal / Illegal dyeing and bleaching units in other districts. The low turn out suggest that people in Tirupur have started to accept the hard reality that nothing much could be done to resolve the dyeing issues for at least now. election results will be out in less than a day, let us wait if there could be any support from the newly elected government.
